The fifteen papers included in this special issue represent a selection of extended contributions presented at the 6th International Conference on Cryogenics and Refrigeration, ICCR2018 held in Shanghai, China, April 12nd – 14th, and organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The conference is cosponsored by the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR).

The International Conference on Cryogenics and Refrigeration (ICCR) was founded by Prof. Guobang CHEN of Zhejiang University in 1989, aiming to enhance academic exchanges between Chinese scholars and those overseas in the field of cryogenics and refrigeration. The second ICCR was held in Hangzhou in 1998. After that, Zhejiang University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University agreed to host and co-chair the ICCR conference every five years, switching between Hangzhou and Shanghai. ICCR2018 brought together 379 participants from 22 countries and regions. 302 submissions were received and more than 90% was presented on the conference as oral and poster presentations.

This Cryogenics special issue contains fifteen peer-reviewed papers on new progress of cryogenic topics, which covers pulse tube cryocoolers,  Stirling cryocoolers, innovative cryogenic primary thermometry, heat transfer down to 4 K, LNG liquefaction process, argon recovery in air separation, cryogenic turbo expander, miniature movable liquid nitrogen generator, vapor cooling shield and sloshing suppression technologies for cryogenic tanks, cavitation of cryogenic flow, and cryogenic pulsating heat pipe. These papers represent a wide spectrum of research under the theme of the special issue, and in particular, from which we can find what the hot cryogenics research is in China currently.

The guest editors wish to thank Dr. Bertrand Baudouy (Editor of Cryogenics) for providing the opportunity to edit this special issue. We would also like to thank the referees who have critically evaluated the papers within the short time. We hope the readers will share our joy and find this special issue very useful. As the technologies in Cryogenics and Refrigeration developed faster in the last decade, the organizers decided to have the conference held every three years since 2018 and will have a new member – the “State Key Laboratory of Air-conditioning Equipment and System Energy Conservation” on the organizing board. You are cordially invited to participate in the next ICCR in Zhuhai, China in 2021.
